What to Look For In Private School?

What to Look For In Private School
Many parents considering private school wonder what criteria they should use to assess the various programs and facilities available for their children. Sometimes a particular type of school works best. In Toronto, we're fortunate to have a wide range of private schools to choose from. These include:
  • Language schools such as the Toronto French School, which allow children to become completely fluent in our other national language.
  • Schools with a religious basis, such as Bialik Hebrew Day School, for parents who prefer that their children receive a particular spiritual instruction.
  • Schools based on particular philosophies, such as Montessori schools based on the teachings of Maria Montessori, or Waldorf schools, which emphasize the arts and feature the education of the whole child.
  • All girl schools, such as Havergal College, or all boy schools such as Royal St. George School.
  • Boarding schools, such Bishop Strachan School.
  • Schools that specialize in accommodating children with learning disabilities, such as Arrowsmith School.
  • Independent laboratory schools, such as UTS.
  • Schools that offer a well-rounded education that prepares students for university, such as Toronto Prep School.
Your family may choose a specialty option if you think it is a good match for your child's abilities, temperament, and particular situation. Most commonly, however, parents are interested in schools that provide a well-rounded educational experience for their children.
Hallmarks of a Good Private School
The best way to start looking for a private school is to explore websites. You can learn a lot about a school by examining their mission statement, goals, and curriculum. Talking to parents of current students or alumni of the schools you're considering may also help to narrow your search. And of course, visiting schools with your child is essential.
Here are some points to consider when assessing possible schools for your child:
  1. Culture. Does the culture of the school reflect your family's priorities? For example, if academic excellence is a top priority for you, does the school celebrate academic achievement? Are the test scores of students high? If, on the other hand, creativity is high on your list of priorities, does the school prize achievement in drama, art, writing, or music?
  2. Values. What values does the school espouse? Is respect for others actively promoted? Does the school encourage a strong work ethic?
  3. Curriculum. Is the curriculum suited to your child's abilities and ambitions? Does the school provide both solid instruction in "core” subjects and up-to-date technological skills?
  4. Athletics. Does the school offer a wide variety of sports throughout the school year? Are students encouraged to join teams? Does the school feature an intramural "house” system that welcomes the participation of all?
  5. Environment. On a school tour you should take note of the atmosphere and the surroundings. Does the school have a welcoming air? Are students friendly and respectful? Are facilities clean and spacious? Are safety and security measures adequate?
