How Are Toronto Prep School Students Chosen?

Toronto's preparatory schools are among the best in the world.  For this reason, most schools take the admissions process very seriously.   It is common for private schools to have a staff member solely responsible for admissions.  The best schools keep their class sizes small, to ensure each student gets ample one-on-one attention and instruction.   This means that space for new students is limited, and only the top candidates are admitted.  How a Toronto prep school student is chosen depends on a variety of reasons, usually some combination of their academic record, interest in the school, and positive personal references.

Academic Achievement

Most private schools pride themselves on their student's academic acumen.  Toronto private schools are a challenging environment for top performers. For this reason, students must provide a record of their prior academic achievement to school administrators during the application process.  Most schools provide students with an intensive learning experience, which allows them to continue their studies at university level.

Personal Interest

Some schools require a statement of personal intent from the prospective student.  This ensures that the student is fully committed to the challenging program they will embark upon, should they be selected.  Most Toronto private schools are looking for students who are naturally curious, and have a keen interest in learning.  Self-motivated, driven students often excel in challenging school environments, and also make a great addition to any classroom group.

References from teachers and other community leaders (such as coaches) are able to provide a unique view of the student's strengths and demeanor.  Students with a positive attitude and willingness to collaborate make welcome additions to the classroom.  A student's character and maturity level are important attributes that can be predictors of their success in the school setting.  Coaches and mentors are able to speak to these abilities firsthand.

To be granted admittance to most Toronto private schools, an admissions counsellor will conduct a one-on-one interview with the prospective student to decide if they will be a good fit for the culture of the school.  This interview is not a test, but simply an opportunity for the school administration to assess the student one final time.  Most schools will require the interview to be in-person; this is because it is also a great opportunity for the student to experience the school more closely.  Students and their parents are encouraged to visit the school campus and look around before making a decision.  Most schools offer tours, open houses, and information nights where interested students can seek more detailed answers to their questions and even speak to current students.
Most private schools in Toronto are seeking a group of academically motivated individuals, which is how prep school students are chosen; because they are engaged and represent a diverse group of students.  But students need to choose the school that best fits their need as well.  Toronto's best private schools are communities of bright and likeminded individuals.  Students that attend these schools will make lifelong friendships and develop a lifelong love of learning that will serve them well into their academic years and beyond.
